Link between water and energy efficiency in the EU’s new Water Resilience Strategy
The EU’s new Water Resilience Strategy is a timely reminder that resilience starts at home and in how we design our buildings, cities, and infrastructure.
The link between water and energy efficiency in the built environment is more than just logical — it’s essential. With the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the National Building Renovation Plans, we now have real frameworks to drive change on the ground: smarter water systems, better use of data, and stronger citizen engagement.
At a time when the EU is aiming to enhance water efficiency by at least 10% by 2030, buildings offer untapped potential. Our members are already delivering innovative, integrated solutions to cut water use and boost performance. These are instruments that help reduce water use without compromising comfort or performance.
The focus on skills development and research, including the European Water Academy and the upcoming Water Resilience R&I Strategy will be key to turning ambition into action.
The building sector can, and should, be at the heart of this shift. Let’s ensure water resilience becomes a core principle of how we plan, build, and live.
