Efficient buildings for a competitive EU

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast in May 2024 acknowledges the key role of buildings in delivering the climate and energy transition. Well implemented, the EPBD can support greater competitiveness in the EU.

The key to delivering tangible results for Europe’s citizens and businesses now lies in promptly and fully implementing the Directive. This entails establishing stable policy frameworks and well-designed financing schemes in each Member State to drive investments in the sector.

From designing energy and water-efficient solutions for new buildings to providing cutting-edge solutions for renovating existing buildings, our industry is ready to support this endeavour and scale up to meet increasing demand.

Energy Efficiency Directive

The Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) represents a step forward in Europe’s journey towards a sustainable and competitive energy future. By setting binding energy efficiency targets for the first time and embedding the “Energy Efficiency First” principle into EU legislation, the Directive lays the groundwork for change across Member States.

The agreed 11.7% target is expected to help the EU save billions in energy imports thereby increasing competitiveness and resilience to external shocks.

Public bodies are required to lead by example, achieving a 1.9% annual energy consumption reduction and renovating at least 3% of the total floor area of their buildings each year.

Member States must translate the updated objectives into their National Energy and Climate Plans and ensure alignment with other initiatives, such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

EU projects

Efficient Buildings Europe is partner of the project, which provides on the ground support to local authorities in six European countries to design and implement the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

Topics such as National Building Renovation Plans, Zero Emission Building Standards, Minimum Energy Performance Standards, Building Renovation Passports and Energy Performance Certificates will be designed, evaluated and implemented in the selected countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Ukraine.
