Infographic: reducing energy demand in buildings, the solution to the EU’s energy dependence
Our infographic on energy dependence showed how Europe’s leaky buildings, which swallow 40% of all energy consumed in the EU, play a major role in its energy dependence:
- 37% of the energy needs of the buildings sector rely on imports, and 61% of all imported gas goes to buildings
- In 2012, EU Member States collectively spent €421bn on energy imports, €1.1bn a day, mostly wasted on inefficient buildings
- A major renovation programme can reduce the energy demand of the EU building stock by 80% by 2050
- Less than a quarter of what Member States spend on energy imports would be sufficient to roll out a deep renovation programme in the EU
