2014-2020 EU budget approval provides a boost to energy efficiency in buildings

The European Parliament approved the legislative package for the Multiannual Financial Framework, including the Structural Funds for 2014-2020. Member States and regional managing authorities could now submit their Operational Programmes, and the Structural Funds can and must be used for more projects on sustainable energy and energy efficiency, including in buildings.

Energy efficiency in buildings features prominently in the new Structural Funds. Notably, the European Regional Development Fund imposes minimum shares to be invested in sustainable energy, including energy efficiency: at least 12% in less developed regions, 15% in transition regions and 20% in more developed regions.

Energy efficient renovation is a real economic opportunity for Europe’s regions: it cuts energy costs for businesses and households and creates millions of local jobs, particularly in the construction sector, while improving health, quality of life and productivity.
