Rémi Collombet in POLITICO on the post-2030 energy efficiency target

Our Secretary General, Rémi Collombet, spoke to POLITICO ahead of the Energy Council in Luxembourg on 29 October, where EU energy ministers are discussing the post-2030 energy framework. The Irish presidency has asked capitals what form a future energy efficiency target should take: a target for overall energy consumption, or an energy intensity target measured against GDP.

Rémi said a consumption target gives governments and investors a clearer signal. “You could consume more energy and not realize savings if your GDP grows even faster,” he said of the intensity option.

A clear target also helps companies decide whether to invest in insulation, heat pumps and windows. “Market visibility is really key,” he said. Targets reduce investment risk because they give banks and manufacturers a clearer sense of future demand.
