Efficient Buildings Europe at Condominium Renovation Day 2026
On 29 September, the International Union of Property Owners (UIPI) and the European Builders Confederation (EBC) held Condominium Renovation Day 2026 in Brussels, the closing event of the LIFE CondoReno project. Over four years, the project supported eight pilot renovations of multi-owner buildings in Belgium and the Netherlands through one-stop shops.
Our Secretary General, Rémi Collombet, spoke on the final panel, “Funding the future: Financing condominium renovations”, introduced by Quentin Jossen, Associate Partner at CLIMACT. He was joined by Jennifer Johnson, Deputy Secretary General of the European Mortgage Federation – European Covered Bond Council (EMF-ECBC), and John Decleyn, Head of Strategy and Controls at Atradius Instalment Credit Protection. The panel looked at financing models, risk-sharing mechanisms and the role of financial institutions in helping condominium owners move from renovation plans to concrete investment decisions.
Takeaways from the financing panel
- The financing need was put at €160 billion a year until 2050.
- The bottleneck is not capital. What is missing are bankable projects, aggregated demand and standardised solutions that lenders can work with.
- Risk sharing, insurance, government guarantees and European funds can de-risk renovation loans and bring in private finance.
- Public finance should provide safety nets, because owners who cannot access financing face social exclusion.
The organisers concluded that one-stop shops can guide owners through the technical, administrative and financial steps of a renovation, and that condominium governance and decision rules need to be part of renovation policy rather than an afterthought.
