Position Paper: EU 2050 Strategy for long-term GHG emissions reduction
Following the European Council’s invitation to the Commission to present a strategy for long-term GHG emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement, EuroACE submitted this position paper to the Commission’s public consultation on the Long-Term Strategy, ahead of COP24.
The EU’s 2050 Strategy should put us on the right track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Considering the extreme weather events of summer 2018 and the stagnation of GHG emissions, the scope of action should not be minimised and the timetable should not be further delayed.
The Strategy should build on the visions for 2050 already enshrined in EU legislation: the Governance Regulation’s scenario for net zero GHG emissions by 2050, and the EPBD’s objective of a highly energy efficient and decarbonised building stock by 2050. It should choose pathways that put Energy Efficiency First and prioritise energy efficient building renovation.
