Efficient Buildings Europe, together with other 17 organisations, signed a joint letter addressed to the European Commission and the 27 governments to highlight the importance of addressing skills and labour shortages in key sectors for the European green transition.
Call to action: 18 European organisations urge heating and cooling decarbonisation
The 2040 Communication recognises the significant decarbonisation potential of the building and industrial sectors. However, it fails to address crucial heating and cooling decarbonisation, representing 80% of buildings’ energy consumption and 60% of industries’ total energy needs.
Heating and cooling decarbonisation is imperative to achieving the 90% GHG reduction ambitious 2040 climate target.
We have signed this joint letter, alongside 18 European organisations, to urge the EU Commission to implement a robust framework to achieve our climate target by 2040 to accelerate the transition.
We need to:
- Phase-out fossil-fuel heating sources
- Finance and de-risk sustainable renewable and recovered heat projects
- Scale up clean and efficient heating and cooling solutions and renewable energy communities
- Develop integrated strategies for building renovations and heating and cooling decarbonisation
Over 2,000 TWh/year of local renewable and recovered heat sources are ready to deploy, enough to meet EU heat demand (Aalborg University Study).
The post-2030 framework must facilitate technology adoption for all citizens, combat energy poverty, and deliver an Industrial Green Deal.
