Mobilising Private Capital for Affordable Building Renovation

The Role of Securitisation in Buildings

The EU needs to renovate its buildings at scale, and public funding alone will not be enough. Co-organised by the Renovate Europe Campaign, Climate Strategy & Partners and the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), this event looked at how EU financial reforms can build a stronger pipeline of renovation and housing investments that attract private capital.

The EU is reviewing its securitisation framework. If designed well, securitisation could connect pools of renovation loans and housing finance with institutional investors. Joshua Brady presented a new report by Climate Strategy & Partners on a carbon data pipeline that would link loan origination to investors with consistent, verifiable information.

Two panels, with speakers from Slättö, ESCP, ING, Onesto, European DataWarehouse, Deutsche Bank, Filao Labs and Energy Efficient Mortgages NL, discussed scaling investment in renovation and affordable housing, and better data for efficient mortgage securitisation. The first panel was moderated by Afroditi Psatha, Head of Operations and Projects, Renovate Europe Campaign, and concluded by Rémi Collombet, Secretary General of Efficient Buildings Europe.
